1. VIRUS PROTECTION UPDATE

Protect against new viruses
HOW TO:
Make sure you have the most current virus protection Definition Updates.
  (This dose not apply to all virus protection software, but a majority)
  Step A. Make sure you have an Internet connection
Step B. Select or right click the anti-virus icon (lower right corner of your screen)
Step C. Choose update
 
 
 
2. WINDOWS UPDATE
 
WHY:
Updates critical safety and functionality patches for your Windows operating system.
HOW TO:
All Windows Users
  Step A. Go to Windows Update and download the critical updates

HOW TO:
Windows XP and Automatic Updates
  Step A. Select Start menu > Control Panel > System
Step B. On the tab labeled Automatic Updates, choose either of the first two settings (Automatic is Recommended)
 

To turn off automatic updates for your computer, select Turn off automatic updating; I want to update my computer manually. If you choose not to use automatic updating, you can always install specific updates from the Windows Update Web site. Open Windows Update in Help and Support Center

 
 
 
3. SYSTEM BACKUP

To backup your important data
HOW TO:
System Backup
  Step A. Select Start menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup
Step B. Some type of removable media is needed to complete this task (floppy, CD, DVD, external HD)
 
 
 
3. DISK CLEANUP
 
WHY:
Removes temporary files which can impair your computer's performance
HOW TO:
Disk Cleanup
  Step A. Select Start menu > Run
Step B. Type cleanmgr and select OK
Step C. Choose the drives you want to cleanup
Step D. Select OK
Step E. Select Yes to confirm cleanup

1. Remove dust from computer components with can of compressed air.
2. Run spy-ware detection software (We recommend Ad-aware or SpyBot)
